The Murder of Maria LaGuardia

May 2009: The following is a mishmash of information currently being gleaned by Juliet Johnson and Fran Johnson Redwine about their great- and great-great-Grandmothers' involvement in a murder in Denver Colorado in 1910-1911.  As more info is gathered, this page will be organized by date.  Ruth had/has in her possession the original newspapers featuring her mother and grandmother and we hope to find them; at this time Ruthy has no idea which box or file they'd be in, the last time the newspapers were seen was mid-90s and there are "lozza boxes" in the garage/storage areas.

Colorado Transcript (Golden, Jefferson County)

Postscript: Stella became pregnant with her only child Ruth in April 1911, three months after Stella's release from jail. Ruth said that Stella and Concetta didn't have to serve more time because "Aunt Nettie told me that the Sheriff was in love with my mother." Ruth laughed and said "Find out if his name was Stevenson." In reference to years earlier when Ruth visited her Mom in the nursing home (Mississippi)and asked "Mama, what was my dad's name?" -- she said she was just testing Stella's mental state -- and Stella answered "Oh honey I didn't catch his name" and Ruth said "You don't know his name?" and Stella said "I think it was Stevenson but that was a long time ago." Anyway.. Ruth says Stella & her dad Francis/Fred met on a blind double date but doesn't know when, "hopefully before I was conceived," she said wryly last week (May 2009).

And now the worst finding of our ancestor Concetta: this may not be 'our' Concetta Sabatini-Cabianca-Forgione, but Mrs. Garramone mentioned how the Italian community wanted "to hang Concetta Forgione several years ago" and a newspaper reporter mentioned a past episode of Concetta burning one of her children, so... the jury's still out on this one, but here's the newspaper account of the horrible 'Concita Sabatina' event:

Our Concetta had children 8 and 6 in 1893 (the year Stella was born, or maybe 1892, she wasn't sure), but as far as we know so far, the 8-year-old was a girl named Ina or Inez, the daughter of Concetta and her 1st husband Michael Cabianca who, the family legend says, demanded a duel with Concetta's paramour Nicola Forgione and after wounding Nicola in the confrontation, fled to New York with his children.  Concetta and Nicola married eventually and had a bunch of little Forgiones who hopefully did some good in this world.  At least they produced progeny who cared enough about them to research their lives and share the information with their children's children's children.  Not to mention publishing their atrocities for all the world to see.... Hey, you do the crime, you serve the cybertime.

Hi,

I didn't find any books on the subject. Newspaper articles are probably
your best bet.

The Colorado Historic Newspapers collection has some articles on the
Garramone trial:
http://www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org/Default/Skins/Colorado/Client.as
p?Skin=Colorado&AW=1240327045626&AppName=2

Are you a CC student? If so there is an article on the NY Times (a short
one) that I can email you. Otherwise you can probably get it through your
local library.

"CONVICT WOMAN OF MURDER.; Jury Finds Mrs. Garramone Killed Mrs. La
Guardia for Her Money." December 24, 1911, Sunday.

Part of the article says "Mrs. Concetta Forgione and her daughter, Stella,
testified that Mrs. Garramone escorted them and their victim to a lonely
spot in the mountains, and there killed Mrs. La Guardia with a butcher's
knife."

Pike's Peak Public Library has a database for the Gazette (Colorado
Springs). I can't get the link to work right now but I'm sure
it'll be
fixed soon:
http://www.ppld.org/specialcollections/Index/article_search.asp

Older articles probably won't have full text online, but you can request
them for free from the public library.

I also found this website with article excerpts from Rocky Mountain News,
although I don't know how credible the website is:

http://coloradoclues.com/Vital%20Statistics%20K-M.htm

Rocky Mountain News is held by Denver Public Library and some other
Colorado libraries, if you wanted to follow up on these articles and try
searching for others.

Hopefully this will get you started. For further research I would suggest
contacting public libraries or talking to our Special Collections
Librarian, Jessy Randall (719-389-6668).
